Lawn Care Tips for the Scottish Climate: A Seasonal Guide

Maintaining a beautiful lawn in Scotland requires a different approach from the advice you'll read in most gardening magazines. Our wetter, cooler climate creates unique challenges — but also some advantages. Here's your season-by-season guide to lawn care in Ayrshire.

    Spring (March – May)

Spring is the most important time for your lawn. As temperatures rise above 6°C, grass starts growing again.

    • First cut: Set your mower to its highest setting for the first cut in March or early April. Never remove more than one-third of the blade length.
    • Scarifying: Rake out thatch (dead grass and moss) to let air and water reach the roots.
    • Feeding: Apply a spring/summer lawn feed high in nitrogen to promote green growth.
    • Overseeding: Patch bare areas by scattering grass seed and lightly raking it in. Keep moist until established.

    Summer (June – August)

Scottish summers are rarely hot enough to stress lawns severely, but a few weeks of dry weather can cause browning.

    • Mowing: Cut weekly, keeping the blade at 25–35mm. Taller grass copes better with dry spells.
    • Watering: Water deeply once a week during dry periods rather than lightly every day. Early morning is best.
    • Weed control: Spot-treat broadleaf weeds with a selective herbicide or dig them out by hand.

    Autumn (September – November)

Autumn is prime time for lawn renovation in Scotland.

    • Aeration: Spike the lawn with a fork or hollow-tine aerator to relieve compaction and improve drainage — essential in Ayrshire's heavy clay soils.
    • Autumn feed: Switch to a high-potassium feed that strengthens roots for winter.
    • Moss treatment: Apply ferrous sulphate or a dedicated moss killer. Rake out dead moss after 2–3 weeks.
    • Leaf clearing: Remove fallen leaves promptly. A layer of wet leaves will smother grass and encourage disease.

    Winter (December – February)

    • Stay off frozen grass: Walking on frosted grass breaks the blades and causes brown footprints.
    • Keep it tidy: Remove debris, fallen branches and any remaining leaves.
    • Plan ahead: Winter is a great time to plan turfing or landscaping projects for spring.
