Why DIY Turfing Usually Disappoints

Laying turf looks simple — and that's exactly why so many DIY attempts fail. The turf itself is the easy part. The ground preparation beneath it is what determines whether your lawn thrives or struggles, and it's where most shortcuts are taken.

Without proper stripping, rotavating and levelling, new turf sits on compacted, uneven ground. The result: bumpy surfaces, poor root contact, drainage problems and patches that yellow and die within weeks. The money saved on DIY is spent again on replacement turf and repairs.

Successful turfing begins with thorough ground preparation. The first step is removing the existing surface — whether that's old turf, weeds, rubble or overgrown vegetation. We use turf cutters for clean removal and dispose of all waste responsibly.

Once stripped, the ground is rotavated to a depth of 100–150mm. This breaks up compacted soil, improves drainage and creates a friable base for root penetration. Heavy clay soils common in parts of Ayrshire may benefit from the addition of sharp sand to improve structure.

After rotavating, we remove stones, roots and debris by hand and rake. The surface is then graded to the desired level and profile. For most residential lawns, a slight gradient away from the house ensures surface water drains naturally.

Fresh topsoil is applied where existing soil quality is poor or where levels need building up. We use screened, weed-free topsoil spread to a minimum depth of 25–50mm over the prepared base. The surface is consolidated with a light roll and raked to a fine tilth.

Turf is laid in rows using a brick-bond pattern — like brickwork, each row is offset from the last to prevent continuous join lines. Each roll is butted tightly against its neighbour with no gaps or overlaps. We use a sharp knife to cut precise curves and edges around borders, trees, paths and garden features.

After laying, the entire lawn is firmed with a roller to remove air pockets and ensure full contact between turf and soil. An initial soaking follows — the lawn needs consistent moisture for the first 2–4 weeks to establish roots. We advise customers on watering schedules based on the season and weather conditions.

For sloped areas, we secure turf with biodegradable pegs to prevent movement until the roots take hold. On very steep gradients, we may recommend alternative approaches such as hydroseeding or terracing, which we can also provide.
