    What Our Turfing Service Includes

A healthy, attractive lawn transforms a garden. It's the centrepiece of most outdoor spaces — the surface children play on, pets run across, and families relax upon. But the difference between a lawn that thrives and one that struggles comes down to how it's laid. At MWM Gardening Services, we deliver professional turfing across Irvine, Kilwinning, Saltcoats, Troon, Kilmarnock and the wider Ayrshire area.

Our turfing service covers every stage: stripping the old lawn, ground preparation, levelling, topsoil application, turf supply and expert laying. We don't cut corners on groundwork because that's where most DIY turfing jobs fail. A properly prepared base gives your new lawn the best possible start.

This service suits homeowners replacing worn-out lawns, developers finishing new-build gardens, landlords preparing rental properties, and anyone who wants an instant transformation. Whether it's a small front garden or a large rear lawn, the process and quality standard remain the same.

We source our turf from trusted Scottish suppliers, ensuring it's fresh, healthy and suited to the local climate. Every roll is laid within 24 hours of delivery to guarantee the best results.

    Why DIY Turfing Usually Disappoints

Laying turf looks simple — and that's exactly why so many DIY attempts fail. The turf itself is the easy part. The ground preparation beneath it is what determines whether your lawn thrives or struggles, and it's where most shortcuts are taken.

Without proper stripping, rotavating and levelling, new turf sits on compacted, uneven ground. The result: bumpy surfaces, poor root contact, drainage problems and patches that yellow and die within weeks. The money saved on DIY is spent again on replacement turf and repairs.

Another common mistake is buying turf and leaving it stacked for days before laying. Turf is a living product — it begins to deteriorate within hours of harvesting. Heat builds up inside rolled turf, killing the grass from the inside out. Professional timing is essential.

Poor edge preparation is another issue. Where turf meets borders, paths or driveways, the join must be clean and level. Gaps, overlaps or turf hanging over edges look messy and create maintenance problems long-term.

How We Lay Your New Lawn

    1

    Site Assessment

We inspect the existing ground, measure the area and discuss your requirements — turf type, drainage needs and any access considerations.

    2

    Ground Preparation

We strip the old lawn, rotavate the soil to break up compaction, remove stones and debris, and apply fresh topsoil where needed. The surface is then raked to a fine, level tilth.

    3

    Levelling & Grading

The prepared surface is carefully graded to ensure even drainage and a smooth, flat finish. This step is critical — every bump and dip shows through the finished lawn.

    4

    Turf Laying

Fresh turf is laid in a brick-bond pattern, with tight joins and clean edges. We press each row firmly to ensure root-to-soil contact. Edges are cut precisely around borders, paths and features.

    5

    Watering & Aftercare Brief

The new lawn receives an initial soaking, and we provide you with a clear aftercare guide covering watering frequency, first mow timing and seasonal care.

Turfing: Ground Preparation, Materials & Technique

Successful turfing begins with thorough ground preparation. The first step is removing the existing surface — whether that's old turf, weeds, rubble or overgrown vegetation. We use turf cutters for clean removal and dispose of all waste responsibly.

Once stripped, the ground is rotavated to a depth of 100–150mm. This breaks up compacted soil, improves drainage and creates a friable base for root penetration. Heavy clay soils common in parts of Ayrshire may benefit from the addition of sharp sand to improve structure.

After rotavating, we remove stones, roots and debris by hand and rake. The surface is then graded to the desired level and profile. For most residential lawns, a slight gradient away from the house ensures surface water drains naturally.

Fresh topsoil is applied where existing soil quality is poor or where levels need building up. We use screened, weed-free topsoil spread to a minimum depth of 25–50mm over the prepared base. The surface is consolidated with a light roll and raked to a fine tilth.

Turf is laid in rows using a brick-bond pattern — like brickwork, each row is offset from the last to prevent continuous join lines. Each roll is butted tightly against its neighbour with no gaps or overlaps. We use a sharp knife to cut precise curves and edges around borders, trees, paths and garden features.

After laying, the entire lawn is firmed with a roller to remove air pockets and ensure full contact between turf and soil. An initial soaking follows — the lawn needs consistent moisture for the first 2–4 weeks to establish roots. We advise customers on watering schedules based on the season and weather conditions.

For sloped areas, we secure turf with biodegradable pegs to prevent movement until the roots take hold. On very steep gradients, we may recommend alternative approaches such as hydroseeding or terracing, which we can also provide.
