What Our Artificial Grass Service Covers
Artificial grass has come a long way from the plastic-looking mats of the past. Today's products are virtually indistinguishable from real grass — with realistic colour variation, natural-looking pile direction and a soft, comfortable feel underfoot. MWM Gardening Services installs high-quality artificial lawns across Irvine, Kilwinning, Troon, Saltcoats and the wider Ayrshire area.
Our service covers everything: excavation, ground preparation, weed membrane, compacted sub-base, shock pad (where required), artificial grass supply, precise cutting and joining, infill application and edge finishing. We handle the complete installation from bare ground to finished lawn.
This service is ideal for homeowners tired of constant lawn maintenance, families wanting a clean, mud-free play surface, pet owners dealing with worn patches and mess, and anyone with shaded or difficult-to-grow areas where natural grass struggles. Front gardens, back gardens, side strips, balconies and commercial areas — we fit them all.
We carry a range of artificial grass products from leading manufacturers, varying in pile height (25mm–40mm), colour, density and intended use. We bring samples to your site visit so you can see and feel the options in your actual garden setting before choosing.
The Hidden Cost of Maintaining a Natural Lawn
A natural lawn in Ayrshire demands year-round attention. Weekly mowing from March to October. Scarifying, aerating and overseeding each spring. Feeding three to four times a year. Weed and moss treatment. Watering during dry spells. Edge trimming after every cut. The hours add up — and so do the costs.
In shaded areas, under trees, or in high-traffic zones, natural grass simply gives up. You're left with bald patches, mud and an uneven surface that looks worse with every passing season. No amount of seed or feed fixes a fundamentally unsuitable growing environment.
For pet owners, the problems multiply. Dogs wear tracks in the lawn, create muddy patches at gates and entry points, and urine burns leave yellow spots that take months to recover. The constant cycle of repair, reseed and regrow is exhausting and expensive.
Many homeowners reach a breaking point — they've spent hundreds on lawn care products, dozens of weekends mowing, and the lawn still looks mediocre. Artificial grass eliminates every one of these problems permanently. It's not a compromise — it's an upgrade.
How We Install Artificial Grass
Site Survey & Product Selection
We measure the area, assess ground conditions and drainage, and show you our product range. You choose the grass that suits your style and budget.
Excavation & Ground Preparation
We excavate to the required depth (typically 75–100mm), remove old turf, soil and debris, and create a clean, level base.
Sub-Base & Membrane
A compacted aggregate sub-base is laid and levelled. Weed membrane is fitted over the base to prevent growth penetrating through the grass.
Grass Installation & Joining
The artificial grass is rolled out, positioned and trimmed to fit precisely. Joins are made using specialist tape and adhesive for invisible seams. Edges are secured with galvanised nails or bonding.
Infill & Finishing
Kiln-dried sand is brushed into the pile to stabilise the fibres, add weight and improve the natural feel. We brush the entire surface to lift the pile and give a freshly-laid finish.
Why Artificial Grass Makes Sense
Zero Maintenance
No mowing, no feeding, no watering, no weeding. An occasional brush is all it takes. Your weekends are yours again.
All-Weather Performance
Looks perfect in rain, frost or drought. No mud, no dead patches, no seasonal decline. Green and usable 365 days a year.
Pet & Child Friendly
Non-toxic, quick-draining and easy to clean. Eliminates mud, worn patches and the constant battle to keep natural grass alive in high-traffic areas.
15–20 Year Lifespan
Quality artificial grass on a properly prepared base lasts 15–20 years. That's over a decade of zero mowing costs, zero product purchases and zero wasted weekends.
Perfect in Shade
Where natural grass struggles — under trees, beside fences, on north-facing plots — artificial grass looks identical to the sunniest spot in the garden.
Drainage Built In
Permeable backing and a prepared sub-base mean water drains away instantly. No puddles, no waterlogging, even in Ayrshire's heaviest rain.
Artificial Grass: Products, Installation & Technical Detail
We offer a range of artificial grass products with pile heights from 25mm to 40mm. Shorter pile (25–30mm) suits high-traffic areas and front gardens where a neat, manicured look is preferred. Longer pile (35–40mm) creates a more natural, luxurious feel ideal for back gardens and feature areas.
All our products are UV-stabilised to resist fading in sunlight. The fibre composition combines straight and curled yarns — straight fibres provide the visible 'blade' while curled base fibres create a dense, natural-looking thatch layer. This dual construction gives the most realistic appearance.
The sub-base is the most critical element of any artificial grass installation. We use compacted Type 1 MOT aggregate, laid in layers and consolidated with a plate compactor to create a firm, level surface. The depth varies — typically 50–75mm for garden installations, deeper for areas with poor existing drainage or soft ground.
Weed membrane is laid over the compacted base. This prevents weed growth penetrating through the grass while still allowing water to pass through. We use commercial-grade geotextile membrane, not the lightweight landscape fabric commonly sold in garden centres.
Joining is where quality shows. Seams are made using 300mm joining tape and specialist outdoor adhesive. The tape is positioned beneath the join, adhesive applied and the two edges pressed together. Done correctly, joins are invisible — even on close inspection. Poor joining is the single most common fault in amateur installations.
Kiln-dried silica sand is the standard infill for residential installations. Applied at a rate of approximately 4–5kg per square metre, it's brushed into the pile using a stiff broom or power brush. The infill weighs the grass down, supports the fibres in an upright position and improves the natural feel underfoot. For pet-focused installations, we can use specialist antibacterial infill.
Edge finishing varies by situation. Against hard edges (patios, paths, raised beds) we trim precisely and secure with adhesive or nails. Against soft edges (borders, flower beds) we tuck the grass under a concealed timber or metal edging strip. The result is a clean, defined border that looks intentional, not afterthought.
