What Our Fencing Service Covers
A fence does more than mark a boundary — it provides security, privacy, wind protection and visual structure to your garden. At MWM Gardening Services, we install, repair and replace fencing for residential properties across Irvine, Kilwinning, Troon, Saltcoats, Kilmarnock and the wider Ayrshire area.
We supply and fit a full range of fencing types: close-board (feather-edge) for maximum privacy and strength, lap panel fencing for a clean, cost-effective boundary, picket fencing for front gardens and decorative boundaries, trellis-topped panels for style with added height, and bespoke solutions for unusual sites or specific requirements.
Our service covers everything from removing the old fence to installing the new one. We handle post hole excavation, concrete setting, panel or board fitting, gate installation and full site clearance. Every post is set plumb, every panel level, and every fixing secure.
This service suits homeowners replacing storm-damaged fencing, those wanting to upgrade their garden boundaries, landlords maintaining rental properties, and anyone building a new garden layout. Whether it's a single panel replacement or a complete perimeter fence, we deliver the same quality of workmanship.

What Happens When Fencing Fails
Rotten posts, cracked panels and leaning fences aren't just unsightly — they're a security risk and a liability. A fence in poor condition offers no protection against intruders, no containment for pets or children, and no privacy from neighbours.
Storm damage is the most obvious trigger. Ayrshire's exposure to Atlantic weather systems means fences take a battering every winter. But the real damage usually starts years earlier — at ground level. Untreated timber posts absorb moisture, rot from the base up, and eventually snap in even moderate winds.
The most expensive mistake homeowners make with fencing is patching rather than replacing. Propping up a rotten post, re-nailing a split panel or adding a temporary support just delays the inevitable — and often makes the final replacement more expensive because the accumulated damage is worse.
Property boundaries also have legal implications. If your fence collapses and damages a neighbour's property, or fails to contain a pet that causes an incident, you could face liability. Maintaining sound boundaries is both a practical and a legal responsibility.
How Our Fencing Installation Works
Site Survey & Measurement
We measure the boundary, assess ground conditions, discuss fencing style preferences and identify any access or level challenges.
Old Fence Removal
We remove the existing fencing — panels, posts, concrete bases and all debris. The line is cleared ready for the new installation.
Post Installation
Posts are set in concrete at precise intervals. Every post is checked for plumb and alignment. We use 4x4 pressure-treated posts as standard, set to a depth that ensures stability.
Panel & Board Fitting
Panels are fitted between posts using appropriate fixings. For close-board, rails are fixed to posts and individual boards nailed on. Gravel boards are fitted at the base to prevent ground contact and extend panel life.
Gates, Finishing & Clearance
Gates are hung, all fixings are checked, and the site is fully cleared. We walk the completed fence with you to confirm everything meets your expectations.
Why Professional Fencing Installation Matters
Structural Integrity
Posts set in concrete at the correct depth with proper spacing. Panels fitted securely with robust fixings. A fence built to stand, not lean.
Pressure-Treated Timber
All timber is pressure-treated to resist rot, insect damage and moisture. This extends the fence's lifespan to 15–20 years without additional treatment.
Clean, Level Finish
Every post plumb, every panel level, every edge clean. The visual difference between professional and DIY installation is immediately obvious.
Full Old Fence Removal
We handle the entire job — removal, disposal, installation. No piles of old timber or concrete left in your garden.
Storm-Resistant Construction
Designed for Ayrshire weather. Deeper post foundations, stronger fixings and proper gravel boards ensure your fence handles whatever the Scottish climate throws at it.
Increased Privacy & Security
A solid, well-installed fence provides genuine security and privacy. No gaps, no weak points, no compromise.
Fencing: Materials, Styles & Construction Methods
Close-board (feather-edge) fencing is the strongest and most durable option for residential boundaries. Individual feather-edge boards are nailed to horizontal rails (typically two or three per bay), overlapping each other to create a solid, windproof barrier. This construction method means individual boards can be replaced without dismantling the entire fence — a significant long-term maintenance advantage over panel fencing.
Lap panel fencing uses pre-made panels fitted between posts. Panels come in standard sizes (typically 6ft x 5ft or 6ft x 6ft) and offer a clean, uniform appearance. They're quicker to install than close-board and generally more cost-effective. However, they're less robust in high-wind areas and can't easily be repaired if damaged — the whole panel needs replacing.
Posts are the foundation of any fence. We use 4x4 (100mm x 100mm) pressure-treated softwood posts as standard. Posts are set in concrete to a depth of 600–750mm depending on fence height and exposure. Corner posts and gate posts receive deeper foundations and additional bracing.
Gravel boards run along the base of the fence between posts. They raise the panels or boards off the ground, preventing soil contact and moisture absorption. Concrete gravel boards are the longest-lasting option; timber gravel boards are replaceable and less expensive. Either way, gravel boards are a critical detail that extends the life of the fence significantly.
For sloped sites, we offer two approaches. 'Stepped' installation keeps panels horizontal, with a gap beneath on the downhill side — this suits panel fencing. 'Raked' installation follows the slope continuously — this is only possible with close-board fencing where individual boards can be cut to follow the gradient.
Gate installation requires additional attention. Gate posts are set deeper (750–900mm) in a larger concrete base to handle the leverage of a swinging gate. We use heavy-duty galvanised hinges and latches. Gates are hung with a consistent gap and operate smoothly without dragging.
We also offer decorative options: trellis toppers for added height with an open feel, capped and rounded posts for a finished look, and stained or painted finishes to complement your garden's colour scheme. Every detail is discussed and agreed during the planning stage.
