    What Our Tree Services Cover

Trees add value, beauty and character to any property — but they also demand respect. Overgrown, damaged or poorly positioned trees can become hazards, block light, damage structures, and create legal liabilities. MWM Gardening Services provides comprehensive tree work across Irvine, Kilwinning, Troon, Kilmarnock and the wider Ayrshire region.

Our tree services include crown reduction, crown thinning, crown lifting, pollarding, deadwood removal, full tree felling, sectional dismantling in confined spaces, and stump grinding. Whether it's a single overhanging branch or a large mature tree, we have the experience and equipment to handle it safely.

This service is for homeowners dealing with trees that have outgrown their space, landlords with tenant safety obligations, property managers clearing sites, and anyone concerned about a tree's health or structural integrity. We also work alongside councils and housing associations on planned tree management.

Every job begins with a thorough on-site assessment. We inspect the tree, check for disease, assess proximity to structures and services, and explain clearly what work is needed, why, and how we'll carry it out. You get a written estimate before any work begins.

The Real Cost of Ignoring Problem Trees

A tree that looks fine from the ground can be hiding serious issues. Internal decay, weak branch unions, root heave and fungal infection can all compromise structural integrity. When a branch — or worse, an entire tree — fails, the consequences range from property damage to serious injury.

Overhanging branches scraping roofs and gutters cause constant wear and block drainage. Roots lifting driveways and paths create trip hazards. Dense canopies block natural light, turning gardens and rooms dark and damp. These aren't cosmetic issues — they're structural and safety problems.

The most dangerous mistake is assuming a tree is 'fine because it's always been there.' Trees change constantly. A severe winter storm, prolonged drought, or the gradual spread of ash dieback can turn a stable tree into a liability overnight.

Insurance claims related to falling trees and branches are common — and expensive. More importantly, if a tree on your property injures someone on a public footpath, you could face personal liability. Regular professional assessment is the only way to manage this risk responsibly.

    How Our Tree Service Works

    1

    On-Site Assessment

We visit your property and inspect the tree in question. We assess health, structure, proximity to buildings and services, and any access constraints.

    2

    Clear Recommendation

We explain exactly what work is needed — whether that's a simple prune, a crown reduction, sectional felling or complete removal. No jargon, no upselling.

    3

    Written Estimate

You receive a clear, itemised quote before we start. We include waste removal and any stump work in the price so there are no surprises.

    4

    Professional Execution

Work is carried out safely using appropriate rigging, cutting equipment and safety procedures. For large trees near buildings, we use sectional dismantling to minimise risk.

    5

    Full Site Clearance

All branches, timber and debris are removed. The site is left clean and tidy. Stumps are ground below grade level if included in the scope.

Tree Services in Detail: Methods, Species & Situations

Crown reduction is the most commonly requested tree service. It involves shortening the tree's branches back to suitable growth points, reducing overall canopy size while maintaining natural shape. This is typically used when a tree has outgrown its space, is blocking light, or is causing concern about wind loading.

Crown thinning selectively removes inner branches to allow more light and air through the canopy. This is particularly useful for dense species like sycamore, oak and beech that can create heavy shade. It reduces wind resistance without changing the tree's overall profile.

Crown lifting removes lower branches to increase clearance beneath the canopy. This is common where branches overhang pavements, driveways, roofs or garden areas. For trees near roads, there are specific clearance requirements that we adhere to.

Pollarding is a more aggressive pruning technique used on species like willow, lime and plane trees. Branches are cut back to the main trunk or framework, promoting dense regrowth. This is a cyclical process and must be maintained once started.

Full tree felling is used where a tree is dead, dying, dangerous, causing structural damage, or simply no longer wanted. Where space allows, we fell to ground level in a controlled direction. In confined spaces — near buildings, fences, overhead cables — we use sectional dismantling, lowering branches on ropes.

Stump grinding removes the remaining stump after felling. We use a specialist grinder to reduce the stump to 150–300mm below ground level. The resulting wood chips can be used as mulch or removed entirely. The area is then ready for replanting, turfing or paving.

Common species we work with across Ayrshire include Scots pine, sycamore, birch, rowan, beech, oak, ash, willow, cherry, apple, leylandii, and a range of ornamental garden trees. Each species has different pruning requirements and growth patterns — experience matters.
